The Communities Partner for Better Health in Oregon and Southwest Washington

Health Philanthropy

The Northwest Health Foundation establishes strategic partnerships to improve health and manages several donor funds related to health and health care. Our goal is to be a center for collaboration and knowledge exchange and a resource for organizations seeking to invest in community health.

Funds at NWHF

The Northwest Health Foundation, a 501(c)(4) foundation, was founded in 1997 with assets remaining from the sale of PACC Health Plans and PACC HMO. The Foundation's mission is to advance, support and promote the health of the people of Oregon and southwest Washington.

In 1999 the NWHF Board of Directors established a second, 501(c)(3) corporation to advance health philanthropy throughout and beyond the Pacific Northwest. This has facilitated the creation of donor-advised and donor-restricted funds at NWHF and opens up new opportunities to leverage our investments for community benefit.

Donor-advised funds:

Donor-restricted funds:

  • Alliance for the Promotion of Physical Activity and Nutrition — support for community coalitions working to prevent obesity and promote healthy living locally
  • Neighborhood Health Fund — support for local health clinics that serve low-income and uninsured populations

Contracted services :

  • Partners Investing in Nursing's Future — A collaborative initiative between the Northwest Health Foundation and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to address nursing issues at the local level through funding partnerships with community and regional foundations.
  • Connecting for Health — NWHF provides staff and resources to Connecting for Health, a public-private initiative founded and managed by the Markle Foundation to realize the full potential of information technology in health and health care, while protecting privacy and security of personal health information.

We also act as fiscal agent for the following organizations:

  • Jefferson Regional Health Alliance
  • Oregon Healthcare Workforce Institute
  • Oregon Simulation Alliance
